Created as a pentaptych, 'The Culling' is a metaphorical representation of  the annihilation of Pompeii, and the extent and magnitude of calamity caused by the eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius.
The scene depicts a billowing cloud of ash emerging from rivers of hot red molten lava.
In contrast, the undulating currents of the scene below depicts the antithesis - the calm, quiet, and unchanging flows of nature.
